Understanding migration aversion using elicited counterfactual choice probabilities

چکیده

This paper investigates how migration and location choice decisions depend on a large set of characteristics, with particular focus measuring the importance nature non-monetary costs moving. We employ stated-preference approach to elicit respondents’ probabilities for hypothetical scenarios, using two waves from NY Fed’s Survey Consumer Expectations. Our stated probabilistic allows us recover distribution individual-level preferences mobility attributes without concerns about omitted variables selection biases that hamper analyses based observed choices alone. estimate substantial heterogeneity in willingness-to-pay (WTP) characteristics moving costs, both across within demographic groups. find be strongly associated attachment current neighborhood dwelling social networks. results indicate evidence sorting into locations as well strong negative association between their expectations actual decisions.

Using Elicited Choice Probabilities in Hypothetical Elections to Study Decisions to Vote.

This paper demonstrates the feasibility and usefulness of survey research asking respondents to report voting probabilities in hypothetical election scenarios. Posing scenarios enriches the data available for studies of voting decisions, as a researcher can pose many more and varied scenarios than the elections that persons actually face. Multiple scenarios were presented to over 4,000 particip...

Free Choice Counterfactual Donkeys

We propose a straightforward analysis of counterfactual donkey sentences, by combining the Lewis/Stalnaker analysis of counterfactuals with standard dynamic semantics. The main idea is to define a similarity relation between world-assignment pairs such that two such pairs are unconnected if their assignments differ. We show that with the help of this ordering relation we can also account for a ...

Ambiguity Aversion: An Axiomatic Approach Using Second Order Probabilities

This paper presents an axiomatic characterization of preferences which allow ambiguity aversion. It is assumed that decision makers treat risky lotteries and ambiguous lotteries separately, with preferences governed by the von Neumann-Morgenstern axioms for risk and a variant of the Savage axioms for ambiguity. These axioms imply that the decision maker chooses among risks according to expected...

Counterfactual Probabilities: Computational Methods, Bounds and Applications

Evaluation of counterfactual queries (e.g., "If A were true, would C have been true?") is important to fault diagnosis, planning, and determination of liability. In this paper we present methods for computing the proba bilities of such queries using the formulation proposed in [Balke and Pearl, 1994], where the antecedent of the query is interpreted as an external action that forces the propos...
